Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Salary (FTE):Academic Research Level A4 ($81,545.80 – $87,535.13)

The School Of Biological Sciences

The University of Queensland has a wonderful research environment, attracting top grades in the national assessment of research quality in all biological disciplines and economics.  The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with 50 full-time academic staff.  The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

The role

A full-time, fixed term position until the 10th December 2019 which contributes directly towards the protection of the Great Barrier Reef. The researcher would join a team developing tools to target where, when, and how the crown-of-thorns starfish should be eradicated to maximise ecological and economic benefits. In practice this means modelling the dispersal of starfish, corals and other marine life and then integrating these results with ecological models and small-scale models of starfish surveillance strategies. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop skills in modelling larval connectivity and working with dynamic research teams (including CSIRO), coral reef managers, and industry.

The position starts in January 2018 or as soon as is practicable thereafter.

The person

Applicants will ideally have a PhD in population modelling, primarily involving numerical or simulation models. They will also have good programming skills. Exceptions will be made for applicants with a masters degree but PhD-equivalent experience in modelling wildlife populations that can be transferred easily to marine ecosystems. An demonstrated interest in coral reef and/or marine ecosystems would be an advantage.

Remuneration

This is a full-time fixed term appointment at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545.80 – $87,535.13 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,408.59- $102,416.10 p.a.).
