The Grodsky Lab in the U.S. Geological Survey New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in quantitative ecology and eagle conservation.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to develop integrated hierarchical models assessing the effectiveness of a non-lead ammunition distribution program for eagle conservation in New York State.
The research will focus on three primary objectives:
- Integrating point-count surveys, statewide camera-trapping data, and eBird observations within an integrated modeling framework to estimate eagle abundance across New York State.
- Investigating spatiotemporal patterns of eagle interactions with gut piles and improving understanding of potential lead exposure using camera-trap data.
- Developing a model for eagle conservation and non-lead ammunition distribution in New York State, building on previous modeling efforts for golden eagles and non-lead ammunition programs in the western United States and incorporating updated empirical data.
Additional research opportunities may include investigating relationships between non-lead ammunition use and eagle take in the context of renewable energy ecology, as well as interactions between raptors and solar energy development.
Desired qualifications
Ph.D. in wildlife ecology or a related field;
Strong experience in quantitative ecology;
Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner;
Creative flexibility and the ability to collaborate effectively in team-based research.
